I know I should be merry this time of the year, but it's been rough.
Our entire family got sick right before Thanksgiving and I wound up in the hospital with pneumonia, which I'm still recuperating from.
As if that's not enough, I then had an adverse reaction to prednisone this past weekend, which I don't have much memory of thanks to the medications necessary to offset the reaction.
With all of this going on, I've had to take a BIG step back and reevaluate all of the holiday plans I've made to ease the stress of having to do ALL. THE. THINGS!

1. Stop trying to do EVERYTHING.
Let go of those outlandish expectations you put on yourself! Make a list of everything you want to do this holiday season and then narrow it down to a more manageable and realistic list. Mark off the things you're only doing to please someone else and the activities you feel obligated to do. Keep the activities that bring you joy and that bring your family together to make memories.
2. Know and RESPECT your limits. Give yourself permission to REST!
Even though you've marked all the activities you DO NOT want to do off your list, you're still going to feel a twinge of guilt for not doing them. But, changing your mind and pushing yourself beyond your physical and mental limits will leave you exhausted and will rob you of your joy.
3. Take advantage of online shopping.
Skip the madness at the stores and do your shopping in the comfort of your own home. Yes, it's nice to get out among the holiday rush and the thrill of a good buy can be exhilarating, but it can also be mentally & physically taxing.
4. Start and end each day with something enjoyable.
Whether it's sipping on your favorite seasonal beverage while journaling in the morning and watching your favorite Christmas movie at night, starting and ending your day with things you enjoy gives you something to look forward to each day.
5. Get help and make it fun.
When you're overwhelmed, knowing there's only so many hours in a day and you only have so much energy to give...ASK FOR HELP! When you have some help, you're able to relax more and you can make boring tasks fun. If you're needing help cleaning the house, turn on your favorite music and make it a dance party. Food need prepped? Have a race to see who can get the most done the quickest. Laundry need folded? Take this time to share funny stories.
